The whakapapa of our practice.
Whakapapa Economics is an open method for assessing value that moves through whānau, place and generations. Matatihi developed it, and stewards it.
The method grew out of applied work: years of impact assessments for iwi, rūnanga, kaupapa Māori programmes and public agencies, where the standard value boundary kept excluding outcomes that clients and communities knew were real. Rather than stretch each assessment ad hoc, we wove the approach together, grounding it in mātauranga Māori and economics, and published it openly at whakapapaeconomics.nz.
It is not a separate service and we do not brand work with it. It is part of how we think. Where outcomes move through whānau, place and generations, we apply it to widen the value boundary while keeping evidence disciplined. Where it doesn't serve the kaupapa, we leave it out.
Anyone may use the method. The site above holds the published framework, worked examples, and the reasoning behind it. Matatihi is the applied practice behind it. Read the overview on this site for how the method works in practice.
